Profile Of The Book

The book, 'Sahaj Marg Philosophy' was brought out by the Rev. Master, Sri Ramchandraji Maharaj of Shajahanpur in the year 1969 and it is more in the nature of a compilation of His earlier works, namely, Reality at Dawn, Efficacy of Rajayoga and a Commentary on Ten commandments than an entirely new work. It is an attempt by the Master to present before the discerning seekers the ideology of the system of Sri Ramchandra's Rajayoga originated by His illustrious Master, Samartha Guru Sri Ramchandra of Fatehgarh. It also contains some novel and original interpretations of the commonly occurring words in philosophy, such as, Jiva, Brahman, Space and Time on the basis of the yogic intuitional insight of the great Master, Sri Ramchandraji, a rare personality in the field of spirituality who had travelled the entire distance on the Path. As He put it a new vocabulary for such words is now needed as they had, in course of time, had lost their original meanings and had become fossilized, so to speak. The system of Sri Ramchandra's Rajayoga, through which man can scale hitherto unattained heights in spirituality, is a New Darshana as presented and established by Rev. Dr. K.C.Varadachari, a great philosopher and yogi and an illustrious disciple of the Master.

This is an unorthodox work in philosophy in the sense that its objective is not to comment upon the Prasthana traya, namely, The BhagavadGita, Upanishads and the Brahmasutras and establishes itself as another school of thought, such as Advaita. Rather the Sri Ramchandra's Rajayoga itself is a new Darshana arising out of the super-conscious perception of its propounder, Sri Ramchandraji Maharaj. According to the Master, all that He has written is a result of His anubhava, whatever a Sankara or a Ramanuja might have said on the subject. It is the rarest of rare occurrences in the field of spirituality that we should have two great personalities viz., Sri Ramchandra of Fatehgarh and His disciple and successor, Sri Ramchandraji of Shajahanpur be Nigamis capable of directly receiving the Shruti. It normally happens that the founder of a new system is the recipient of the revelation and his successors expound and elaborate it so that their fellow beings may comprehend and follow the same, say, as in the case of Lord Buddha. That is to say that the followers are Agama karakas. Even Lord Sri Krishna is the giver of the Pancharatra Agama. In the case of Sri Ramchandraji it so happened that the Ocean merged in the drop and He was structured in such a way that Nature chose Him as the Special Personality and has entrusted to Him the great task of spiritual regeneration of mankind and thorough overhaul of Nature herself. Thus His writings and sayings have the ring of genuine authority normally attributed in the tradition to the Vedas as He is the personality weaving the spiritual destiny of man for the millennia to come.

The book is divided into two parts, the first one, dealing with the theory and the second, with practice. This is indeed a welcome feature, because any new philosophical work normally states the positions adopted by rival systems, enters into a debate arguing why the author's system is superior to the others in providing satisfactory explanations as to the nature of reality, the means and the goal. It is a battle of scholarship and profound erudition and is won or lost to the extent the new system is consistent with the import of the Prasthana traya. Linguistics and semantics play a dominant role, the practical aspects of a life based on spirituality being largely ignored. The Master has always laid a great stress on practice and a practical approach to spirituality and has provided in the second part invaluable advice to the seeker on the path on various aspects of sadhana. The special features of the system, namely, The Master's support and the infusing into the practicant the superfine divine consciousness for his spiritual upliftment known as Pranahuti are dwelt upon in detail.

The profound contributions of the Master in the field relate to His revelations as to the real nature of knowledge and ignorance, the state of realization and the means thereof, the theory of parallelism and invertendo and the stages of progress on the road to the Ultimate destination. Knowledge is not mere accumulation of facts or mouthing the choice phrases such as, Aham Brahmasmi, Jagan mitya Brahma satyam etc.; on the contrary, it is the result of imbibing the effect of merging in a spiritual condition brought about in a natural way by following a subtle process under the guidance of a capable Master. Knowledge and ignorance are the extremes of the same thing and we can say that one is proceeding from lesser ignorance to total or complete ignorance. The actual state is neither vidya nor avidya but beyond both.

A truly revolutionary exposition of the role and destiny of Man and his place in the cosmos is given by the Master. Any one reading this account will realize the very important role assigned to him as a human being by Nature, his true potential and will begin to behave responsibly. The great Master Himself is a supreme instance of divinization of man and his growth to full potential which results in his utilization by Nature herself as a perfect instrument for the fulfillment of God's will. The Master says emphatically that it is the result of dedicated and diligent practice of the system of Sri Ramchandra's Rajayoga under the active guidance, grace and support of His Master. He says He does not know any other God apart from His Master. The Master is a firm believer in the scientific method of 'Do and Feel' and is never tired of exhorting the sincere seeker to take up the practice of the system of yoga propounded by Him, find for himself the efficacy of the system and derive wholesome spiritual benefit from it even as He had experienced it. He declares that the system is open to all humanity without any distinction as to caste, creed, gender, nationality or previous religious background. The willingness to try the system is the only criterion for admission into it.

Another very significant aspect of this system of Rajayoga, is the discovery by the Adi Guru of the Central Region or the sphere of the Absolute and the opening of the possibility to the seeker of entering into and dwelling in it even while being in the body and leading a normal life of the householder. The Master, Sri Ramchandraji perfected the yogic technique of taking the sadhaka into this region and helping him to stay in the region and not only that carried it out in the case of a number of His associates during His lifetime. This is a unique phenomenon in the field of spirituality as it was considered impossible, so far, for an embodied being to retain the physical body after reaching the sphere of Sahasrara. All this has been made possible by the grace of the Adi Guru whose prayers to God in this regard were answered and the way was opened for entire mankind.

It has been the aspiration of all religions to establish universal brotherhood but this has not been actualized so far. Swami Vivekananda hoped that Vedanta held the answer and spared no pains in spreading that doctrine, giving it a tremendous thrust in his celebrated address in the forum of the World Parliament of Religions. However, the hopes have been belied. Man has been fighting in the name of religion using it to divide rather than to forge unity. In this context attention of the reader is invited to an entirely new method, an invention by the great Master and which every one can easily practise. It is based on meditation on a point called, 'A' located in the chest using one's own fingers. Continued practice of this meditation paves the way for the development of the feelings of brotherhood and the disposition to share. One is helped to shed self- centeredness and be gradually filled with concerns for the welfare, spiritual and secular of his fellow beings. The transformation of the world is to be effected through the transformation of the individual and this is made possible through the influx of the divine mediated by the Master. This indeed is the relevance of the new revelation to humanity caught as it is in the quagmire of rank materialism, aggression and competition, addiction to sensuality and violence, religious, economic and social discrimination.

May the readers of this book come forward to take up the system and attain the supreme object of life through the grace of the Great Master.
